In many of the museum workshops you can see how historic working methods were used to make various products. The rushing sound of water wheels mingles with the banging of hammers in the forges and the screeching sounds coming from the saw-mill. Visitors are immediately made aware of the physical discomforts and dangers inherent in past working conditions.
Visitors are greeted with pleasant aromas emanating from a bakery. Some 100 years ago bread, rolls and biscuits were baked in an old-fashioned terrace oven. In the tobacco workshop one you can smell the fumes from Brazil and Sumatra cigars. A considerable number of products made in the museum can be enjoyed on the site. These include bread and cigars, sausages and ham, not forgetting the top-fermented "Mäckinger Brew". There is plenty to see and learn in the museum, and old and young alike can enjoy a day-out packed with different activities.
The LWL Open-Air Museum is the right address for anyone looking for an unusual setting for a special occasion. A wedding ceremony can be arranged in a historical wedding hall, and festivities can be organised in a zinc rolling-mill or a forge. Every year there are special exhibitions and a programme of special events in addition to the permanent features in the museum.
