Brewing in Unna has been in evidence since 1346. Indeed, until well into the 19th century, the image of the town was mainly provided by the considerable number of small breweries most of which were linked with the catering and spirits business. In 1859 Wilhelm Rasche and his brother-in-law Wilhelm Ulmcke founded the Linden brewery between the town of Unna and the Old West cemetery. At first it was merely a small operation alongside eleven others. But very soon it began to expand rapidly. As early as 1883 the brewing trade in Unna was dominated by the two mechanised breweries, the Linden brewery and the Adler brewery located further to the north of the town.
The growing demand for beer made it necessary to embark on a comprehensive programme of rebuilding. For this reason, in 1889, the lower part of the northern ring road had to be moved further eastwards all the way up to the junction with Massener Street.
Whereas the output of beer was only 690 hectolitres in the first year of operations, by 1895 it has risen to more than 65,000 hectolitres. The staggering increase in turnover was made possible by the installation of additional boilers. The family business Linden brewery was turned into a joint-stock company in 1895, by which time the good reputation of the brewery had extended well beyond the boundaries of Unna.
In 1918 the Linden brewery merged with a larger partner the Dortmund Hansa Brewery. The economic situation after the First World War and the serious inflation led to a further merger in 1922 with the Adler brewery, the sole major competitor in Unna which had been in operation since 1867. The amalgamation into the Linden-Adler brewery ensured the survival of both. By contrast, all the breweries were closed down in the neighbouring towns of Schwerte, Kamen, Lunen, Werl, Soest and Menden.
