Von Duisburg Hbf (U-Stadtbahn-Ebene) mit Straßenbahn 901 (Richtung Obermarxloh) bis "Matenastraße". Von dort einstündiger Fußweg durch den Matenatunnel, dann über Alsumer Str. (rechts), Alsumer Steig (links), Rheindeich zum Haldenaufstieg.

500 Meter südlich des Alsumer Steigs biegt die unscheinbare Matenastraße ab. Sie führt inmitten des Hüttenwerkes - und wo es scheinbar kein Durchkommen gibt, geht es durch einen Auto- und Fußgängertunnel mitten unter dem ThyssenKrupp Steel Hochofenwerk entlang. Jeder Schimanski - Fan kennt den "Matena-Tunnel", der Richtung Bruckhausen führt und der in vielen Schimi-Filmen zum Dreh genutzt wurde.
The Alsum Hill used to be a huge rubbish dump. Nowadays it has been cleaned up and redesigned as a green area offering visitors the most interesting overall view of the region in the whole of the Ruhrgebiet. On a clear autumn day at dawn or dusk the top of the hill will be packed with photographers from the whole of Europe. To the east there is a view of the Northern areas of Duisburg dominated by the gigantic site of the Thyssen-Krupp steelworks. Directly below it lies a group of steel ovens in Hamborn, and the blast furnaces at the Schwelgern I works designed by the great German industrial architect, Fritz Schupp. In stark contrast, a large stretch of seemingly untouched rural landscape lies spread out below the hill to the west behind the River Rhine as it flows towards the Netherlands.
