The Berger monument

The Berger monument in Witten is 20 metres tall and stands on a hill 130 metres above the Ruhr Valley, which offers visitors an amazing view of the river below and the surrounding countryside. The monument and the adjoining park have always been a popular venue for day-trippers.

The viewing point and the adjoining park at Hohenstein with a bee stand and the Europa Academy are all highly popular venues for day-trippers from the region. There are plenty of places to walk here, and afterwards visitors can always visit the restaurants in the Haus Hohenstein Hotel. The spot was once the site of one of the largest open-air theatres in Germany.

The view from Hohenstein looks down over the hillsides of the Ruhr Valley. In the distance can be seen the old chimneystack in the Nightingale Mine in the Mutten Valley, which is generally regarded as the cradle of mining in the Ruhrgebiet.
