The Haniel mining Tip

© RIK/ Guntram Walter

The Haniel spoil tip in the north of Bottrop is a popular destination for daytrippers, since it offers them a variety of different leisure activities, including walking, jogging and kite flying. The majority of the tip, which lies about 100 metres above the adjacent colliery site, has been greened over and offers visitors a wonderful view of the Prosper-Haniel mine and the countryside to the north-west of the Ruhrgebiet.

Every year on Good Friday Christians meet up at the top of the Haniel spoil tip. In 1995 a "Way of the Cross" was officially opened here. It was created by an artist and nun called Tisa von Schulenburg, the Oberhausen artist Adolf Radecki and apprentices at Prosper-Haniel colliery. Every station along the way contains a copper plate depicting the sufferings of Christ and a piece of mining equipment. The overall result makes clear the traditionally close relationship between the Church and the coalmining industry in the area. This relationship was further strengthened by the influx of Catholic immigrants who came to work in the mines at the start of the 20th century. The tall cross at the top of the spoil tip reminds visitors of the Pope’s visit here on the 2nd May 1987. Mining apprentices and their supervisors built a Cross from colliery timber and erected it in the main square on the site of the Prosper-Haniel colliery. Five years later the restored Cross found its final place of rest on the southwest edge of the plateau at the top of the spoil tip.
