The plateau at the top of the tip contains an amphitheatre modelled on classical Greek lines. It was opened in 1899 and can seat 800 persons.
The Haniel tip received a further attraction in 2002 when the Basque painter and sculptor Agustín Ibarrola erected his archaic installation "Totems" here, consisting of over 100 specially prepared railway sleepers. The work is intended to link the "seemingly contradictory features of an industrial and natural area". Ibarrola first made a reputation for himself as a chronicler of structural change in the region around Bilbao, and the industrial landscape around the estuary of the River Nervión. In his "painted" woodland - "El Bosque de los Tótems" and the painted concrete cubes, "Los cubos de la Memoria" in the harbour of the town of Llanes in Astura, he reflects the human conflicts which occurred in the region.
The Prosper-Haniel coalmine was created in 1974 when the Prosper colliery merged with the Franz Haniel colliery. It is still in operation. The Franz Haniel shaft with its eye-catching trestle winding gear (1951) above shaft 2, was sunk in 1921 as part of the mining operations of the Good Hope steel mill. However strong water penetration prevented any real mining until 1952. Now that fill-in work has been completed at the Haniel tip, the whole of the waste mining material from the colliery is transported to the Schöttelheide site.
