The Schurenbach mining tip

Up until the end of the 1950s almost all the waste material from mining at the Zollverein pit was used to fill the disused shafts below ground. As coal mining became increasingly mechanised, however, the growing amount of dead rock was transported to the newly designated central Schurenbach spoil tip. After the Zollverein pit was closed down in 1986 the tip continued to be used by other collieries until winter 1998. A roughly 15 metre tall steel slab designed by the architect Richard Serra was then installed at the top of the tip. Since then the Schurenbach tip has been one of the many landmarks in the Emscher region.
