The former mining tip belonging to the Erin colliery is now the highest point in the town of Castrop-Rauxel and one of the sources of the Deininghaus stream. Following a special workshop involving local inhabitants, artists and town planners it was turned into a landmark in 1993, featuring a huge artistically designed sundial which is accessible to visitors.
The Graf Schwerin colliery, along with the Erin and Viktor collieries, had a massive impact on the development of the town of Castrop-Rauxel. It started operations in 1882 and was enlarged by a coking plant in 1887. Following the crisis in the mining industry in the 1950s it was merged with the Lothringen colliery in Bochum in the early 60s and finally closed in 1967. The closure of the coking plant followed in 1975. The only remaining visible sign of the Schwerin colliery is the neighbouring Schwerin mining tip.
