Theme Trails - an authentic insight |
The gardens and parks of the Ruhrgebiet are also a part of the region's industrial heritage. Public gardens financed by joint stock companies, representative municipal parks created by self-assured industrial cities, people's parks for general recreation, elaborately designed squares in front of colliery gates, tycoons' villas, working-class housing settlements and allotments all mirror the history of housing, society and big business in the Ruhrgebiet.
We have selected a cross-section of remarkable sites to give you a good impression of the representative abundance of power, the urban planning significance and the powerful links between people's everyday lives and the gardens and parks in the region. It is not only interesting to get a new perspective on familiar places like the Villa Hügel park in Essen, the municipal park in Bochum and the Romberg park in Dortmund, but also to discover less-known sites like the gardens of the Raffelberg Solbad in Mülheim, the old steeplechase track in Castrop-Rauxel and the allotment system in Bochum.
