Industrial history in the Unna region Salt, steam and coal were the bases for economic development in the broadly agricultural area on the eastern edge of the Ruhrgebiet. Did you know that the first steam engine in the Ruhrgebiet went into action at the Königsborn saltworks? Here it is particularly easy to follow the history of coal mining as it gradually shifted northwards from the Ruhr valley towards Münsterland. The pithead tower of the Königsborn colliery 4 in Bönen is an important architectural landmark. At night it is illuminated to symbolise the socalled " East Pole" of the mining industry. The best place to start a tour is at the centrally-placed Linden Brewery in Unna. From here you can include a stroll through the attractive half-timbered streets of the old town.
