Theme Trails - an authentic insight |
Rapid developments in the last 150 years have made the Ruhrgebiet one of the largest industrialised urban conurbations in the world. Now the region is in the midst of a strong process of transformation. But where did it all begin? Where are the roots of this development?
Many testimonies to industrial history have disappeared, buried beneath the sheer mass of new buildings and modern technological advances. Nonetheless visitors who set out in search of evidence of early industrialisation can still find amazing traces of the pioneering age.
Above all in the south of the region on the banks of the Ruhr – the river which has given its name to the whole area – and its tributaries you can come across relics of old mining buildings, mills, hammer works, locks, industrial production sites and early factories, derelict railway lines and sites which recall famous persons from the pioneering age of the industrial revolution.
